One thing that an important state like Jammu and Kashmir cannot effort to carry on is, the President’s rule.
The state is without a chief minister since the death of Mufti Sayeed recently. It was being expected that after the mourning days her over, her daughter and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti will take over the mantle of the state, but that was not to be, at least till date.
President’s rule is not the permanent solution for the state, or to be more precise, anywhere in the country.
Last year, after the Assembly Elections, PDP was the single largest party with 28 seats in in 87-member Assembly. It was closely followed by BJP with 25 sears, their best performance in the valley ever.
The PDP and the BJP entered into an agreement through Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) and formed the government under Sayeed, which last for around sick months before Sayeed fall ill.
After Sayeed’s death Mehbooba seems to be reluctant on forming the government with BJP. She is reportedly opined that BJP has not fully serious on implementing CMP.
She might have her own valid reason to be sceptic about BJP, but should she continue to put the geographically and politically crucial state, which sees terrorists’ attacks almost daily, without any government?
If she doubts her ability to lead the alliance government than, she can very well pass on the responsibility to someone else in the party like Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who was deputy chief minister of the state till 2006.
Its high time PDP and BJP once again form the government for the betterment of the people, as the state is reeling under severe economic crises post flood before elections.
Even if she is unhappy with the Centre for not releasing enough funds for the state, that doesn’t mean she can hold people of the state under ransom. She must allow formation of the government, after that the talks and demands may follow.
She may well take a cue from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMP supremo J Jayalalithaa, whos party is reportedly entering into an alliance with BJP for forthcoming state polls.
Remember, the southern state had also face devastating floods at the end of last year, and the Centre also did not heed to much of state government’s demand for more aid needed for re-infrastructure.
And yes, this is not the first time AIADMK is tying up with BJP. It was part of NDA government when Atal Behari Vajpayee was prime minister.
To add fuel into the fire is J&K’s economic crisis. State has plunged into further economic crisis with an unfunded gap of over Rs 5,000 crore in resources, resulting in stoppage of all new development projects in the state.
Some experts stress that the crisis has been caused from unresolved liabilities which have crossed over Rs 2,000 crore across the state funds.
As they say, perform or perish’, same goes with PDP. They either form the government with their choice of partners from BJP, Congress or National Conference or let the state go for Assembly polls once again.
